Life, the Universe, and Everything

by Tom Bozzo

The proposed first-ounce rate for First-Class letters in the U.S., for possible implementation in 2007: 42 cents.

Needless to say, the Post's reporter should have mentioned, in referring to past stamp prices, that consumer price (CPI) inflation makes the 18 cent stamp of 1981 slightly more expensive in 2006 dollars (about 39.6 cents) than today's 39 cent stamp.

In the unlikely event you've been curious about what's kept me busy (and will keep me busy for the next several months) and led me to bring in the co-bloggers — or, perhaps more likely, are having trouble sleeping, etc. — see here (461 KB PDF) and here (118 KB PDF).

I now return to the standard practice of not blogging about postal economics matters.
Comments:
My mother would be so proud. Not sure if the Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee would go along with the "consultants" theme, though.

I love MT's idea, and I recommend she do the art work. Consultants truly are unsung heros, Tom. Plus, crazier things have happened! Who knows? Maybe one day we'll see your report made into a movie. I'd audition for the part of FSM 100 Green FLow Chart Square. (She's learning to effectively cope with Cancellation, while doing her best to keep those Manual Units coming out-- a stretch, but doable role.) We might have to do something with the name, though.

Boy, you weren't kidding when you said you've been busy. I bet your mother is already proud.

Um, Janelle, you clearly aren't driving your Porsche enough if you have time to get that far into my report(s). The picaresque adventures through the postal system prior to preparing those charts are probably more filmable than the rest of the process. Plus, adding women to a fictionalization will help the box office.

Great verifictionary, there.
