'Essentially Honorable'

So says one of McCain's Arizona buddies about the guy. Our neighbor the 91-year-old, Obama-supporting, retired political science professor — he does drive a Prius, admittedly — described McCain as a "good man" at a recent dinner. After some interrogation, I determined that McCain was getting credit from having spent his time as a POW getting tortured and all.
Now, with the latest revelations, we have (among other things):
- Shtupped younger, richer woman while still married to his first wife. The objection to characterizing Mrs. McCain as a former pill-popping homewrecker, even though she was both, is that it takes two to wreck a home. But I'm sure McCain looked very uncomfortable playing "From Here to Eternity" with Cindy Lou back in '79.
- Has (or thought he had?) plausible deniability — I assume, pending today's planned trip to the confessional — with much younger lobbyist woman with whom he went to parties and took rides on clients' jets. I'm sure he really wanted to be flying coach like David Bonior (whom I regularly saw on the DCA-DTW run, back in the day), and looked like he wasn't having a good time at all as he settled in for whatever he drank and whatever else he did on the Paxson jet. Dingellgrams to affected regulators were totally regretted!
- Against torture before he was for it.
- Really wasn't good at all at taking campaign contributions from Charles Keating.
- Campaigning for leadership of a country in the throes of a serious economic crisis under the tutelage of Phil Gramm. 'Nuff said.

I was inclined to give him a pass on Keating (flimsiest of the five), but after Cindy McCain said she "trusts" the man who cheated on his first wife with her, it might as well be sex that takes him down.
